Vintage buses to run today on the M23 and M8

Vintage New York City Transit buses from the museum fleet are scheduled to be running this afternoon starting at 2:30 PM on the M23 and M8 routes. They will also be running every weekday for the rest of the month, except during bad weather. They will be rotating among the M8, M14, M20, M23, M34, M42, M57, M79 and Q32 routes. But with only a maximum of five vintage buses in service at any one time, and possible less, it may be hard to find them.

Ride the Holiday Nostalgia Train

New York City Transit will once again be running the Nostalgia Train during the holiday shopping season. The train runs in regular passenger service along the from 2 Av to Queens Plaza on Sundays in December, and also on November 30. It’s a great event and a lot of fun for everyone. And besides the normal subway fare to enter the turnstiles, there is no additional charge. Here’s what the official poster poster says:

To celebrate the holiday season, customers using the 6 Avenue line between the Queens Plaza and Lower East Side 2 Av stations have a treat in store. MTA New York City Transit’s “Nostalgia Train” is running every Sunday, November 30, and every Sunday in December!

With a little bit of luck and good timing, you can catch a ride on this classic subway car at stations along the V train icon line between Queens Plaza and 2 Av.

She’s not wearing any pants!

This public transit gem comes from The Salt Lake Tribune:

Pantsless woman really a fashion victim
10/28/2008 :: A woman was yanked from a TRAX train Monday morning after fellow riders reported that she was not wearing any pants. Utah Transit Authority officers asked the woman to get off the train at about 7:30 a.m. at the 5400 South station in Murray. After they spoke with the woman, they realized she was wearing a micro miniskirt. Her jacket covered the skirt, leading fellow riders to believe she was not wearing anything beneath her waist, said UTA spokeswoman Carrie Bohnsack-Ware. After officers interviewed the woman, they let her get back on the train and continue her ride.

Right Beverley, Wrong Address

wrong-beverley.png

As first reported by The Gallery of Absurd Stuff Blog, the MTA made a mistake this morning on its website. The photo is indeed of the Beverley Rd subway station. However that station is not located at Nostrand Av. The station at Nostrand Av is called Beverly Rd and is underground.

Rockettes Ride the Vintage Rails

dsc_7586_800.jpg

Two Rockettes handed out free Metrocards and rode NYCT’s “vintage” “nostalgia” train of R-1/9 class cars from the World Trade Center station on the (E) to the 47-50 Sts Rockefeller Center station on the (B)(D)(F)(V). The event was a promotion for the recently announced deal where you get $10 off the price of a ticket to the Christmas Spectacular starring The Rockettes when you use or mention code ‘NYCT’. A special metrocard was released advertising this deal as well.

The ride was great and a lot of regular passengers were surprised and excited to both see an old train pull in to their station, and get to meet The Rockettes. Thanks to everyone who made this promotional ride possible, and I can’t wait to ride these old subway cars again as part of NYCT’s Holiday Nostalgia Train rides on the (V) from 2 Av to Queens Plaza on Sundays from 10 AM to 4 PM beginning November 30th.

You can see additional photos I took at this event by clicking the following link: I want to see all the photos!!!

Why NYCT employees think photography is not allowed

Another SubChat gem…

I’m having difficulty trying to find it myself via the new rule numbers, but the old rule number was 36(i).

Here’s the link: http://www.subchat.com/read.asp?Id=691242. Read up and down the subthread.

They can’t even keep track of a rule as seemingly important as this. So how will they ever be able to keep track of whether or not photography is allowed????

Mowing Ballparks and Milwaukee

I saw the title of the following article and immediately suspected that Milwaukee may be mentioned, since I recalled reading long ago about the Brewers’ groundskeepers and their famous field grass designs.

Groundskeepers Display Artistry on the Diamond

I was right.

He was an assistant groundskeeper at Milwaukee County Stadium in 1993 when a concert badly damaged the grass in the outfield. With the support of the head groundskeeper Gary Vanden Berg, Mellor mowed a busy pattern to serve as camouflage. The design, not the damage, was all anyone noticed.

“I still think that was the coolest pattern he ever made,” Vanden Berg said.

Mellor found himself with a niche, and others followed.
