Meadowlands Rail Station on March 10, 2009
I was at the New Meadowlands Stadium today, so I drove by the Meadowlands Rail Station to check on its progress. I’m not sure how to tell if it will be ready to open by this summer, so here are some photos for you to judge for yourself.
I was doing a Google search today for information on a certain MetroCard when I ran across some flickr photos of the Rockettes handing out MetroCards at the World Trade Center terminal of the (E) subway line. I thought “hey, that’s funny, I was there too and I took some very similar photos.”
So I looked closer at this user’s photostream and saw that all of the photos had to do with either MetroCard promotions or popular tourist sites that New York City Transit can bring you to. This had to be something official.
Final confirmation came when I clicked on the user’s Profile and read this:

So the New York City subway has gone social! It’s part of Web 2.0! Congrats!

The latest word is that the new South Ferry subway terminal is scheduled to open for revenue service at MIDNIGHT on Monday, March 16, 2009. I guess March 16th is the new February 2009 (which in turn was the new December 2008, which in turn was the new “late 2007”)…
Edit: NY1 confirms that Monday is the scheduled opening. Though NY1 thinks that South Ferry has been closed since December. Someone there needs to get a clue. A station can’t be closed if it never opened.

Barge of Death passes under the Broadway Bridge - Sunday morning
What a way to ruin a beautiful Sunday!
The Barge of Death returned to the 207 Street Subway Yard this morning. It passed under the raised Broadway Bridge. The barge was escorted by the Weeks Marine tugs “Virginia” and “Shelby”.
Edit: The trucks barge was seen returning around 12:30 PM.

British Transport Police patrol New York's Penn Station in an exchange program with the Amtrak Police Department.
Walking through the Amtrak concourse at the rathole Penn Station this morning, I came upon the gaggle of British Transport Police (BTP), still decked out in the traditional Bobby’s helmets and all, who were last seen in Philly on Tuesday. After checking out Dunkin’ Donuts at Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station, maybe they came up to New York to check out Krispy Kreme? I’m kidding. I did not see them stop by the Krispy Kreme store in the Amtrak Rotunda. But when I left, they were heading in that direction…
Actually, their Late Winter 09 Tour schedule was published in a couple news articles on Tuesday about the exchange program with Amtrak Police, but I didn’t notice them. So it’s a good thing I was running a few minute late today!

The MTA has revealed a ton of details about the expected new rail service to the NJ Meadowlands Sports Complex starting later this year, for NFL NY Giants and NY Jets football games and other Sports Complex events.

Even though the platform width fix was only supposed to take three to four weeks, it looks like the new South Ferry subway terminal won’t be opening any time soon, since the MTA spokesman can’t give an opening date at this time. This comes after it didn’t open in January 2009 or December 2008, which were two previously announced opening dates.
