Meadowlands Rail Station on March 10, 2009

I was at the New Meadowlands Stadium today, so I drove by the Meadowlands Rail Station to check on its progress. I’m not sure how to tell if it will be ready to open by this summer, so here are some photos for you to judge for yourself.

New York City Subway goes Web 2.0

I was doing a Google search today for information on a certain MetroCard when I ran across some flickr photos of the Rockettes handing out MetroCards at the World Trade Center terminal of the (E) subway line. I thought “hey, that’s funny, I was there too and I took some very similar photos.”

So I looked closer at this user’s photostream and saw that all of the photos had to do with either MetroCard promotions or popular tourist sites that New York City Transit can bring you to. This had to be something official.

Final confirmation came when I clicked on the user’s Profile and read this:

New York City Transit’s official Flickr account informs viewers of MetroCard Deals, special events, and points of interest to be found while traveling on its subways and buses. Visit us at www.mta.info

So the New York City subway has gone social! It’s part of Web 2.0! Congrats!

The subway’s flickr account is “MetroCard City 2009“.

New South Ferry Terminal may open March 16

The latest word is that the new South Ferry subway terminal is scheduled to open for revenue service at MIDNIGHT on Monday, March 16, 2009. I guess March 16th is the new February 2009 (which in turn was the new December 2008, which in turn was the new “late 2007”)…

Edit: NY1 confirms that Monday is the scheduled opening. Though NY1 thinks that South Ferry has been closed since December. Someone there needs to get a clue. A station can’t be closed if it never opened.

Barge of Death passes under the Broadway Bridge - Sunday morning

What a way to ruin a beautiful Sunday!

The Barge of Death returned to the 207 Street Subway Yard this morning. It passed under the raised Broadway Bridge. The barge was escorted by the Weeks Marine tugs “Virginia” and “Shelby”.

Edit: The trucks barge was seen returning around 12:30 PM.

Here are more photos:

British Transport Police Patrol New York’s Penn Station

British Transport Police patrol New York's Penn Station in an exchange program with the Amtrak Police Department.

British Transport Police patrol New York's Penn Station in an exchange program with the Amtrak Police Department.

Walking through the Amtrak concourse at the rathole Penn Station this morning, I came upon the gaggle of British Transport Police (BTP), still decked out in the traditional Bobby’s helmets and all, who were last seen in Philly on Tuesday. After checking out Dunkin’ Donuts at Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station, maybe they came up to New York to check out Krispy Kreme? I’m kidding. I did not see them stop by the Krispy Kreme store in the Amtrak Rotunda. But when I left, they were heading in that direction…

Actually, their Late Winter 09 Tour schedule was published in a couple news articles on Tuesday about the exchange program with Amtrak Police, but I didn’t notice them. So it’s a good thing I was running a few minute late today!

Here are the photos that I took. Note: I was thankfully not arrested for taking these photos 🙂

Meadowlands (Giants, Jets, and more) Train Service Details Revealed

The MTA has revealed a ton of details about the expected new rail service to the NJ Meadowlands Sports Complex starting later this year, for NFL NY Giants and NY Jets football games and other Sports Complex events.

Map of Rail Service to the Meadowlands

Map of Rail Service to the Meadowlands

First things first – New Jersey Transit fares:

  • Hoboken to Meadowlands Station = $5.75 per person (off-peak round-trip ticket)
  • Penn Station to Meadowlands Station = $7.75 per person (off-peak round-trip ticket) and $4.00 per person (one-way ticket).
  • Secaucus to Meadowlands Station = $5.00 per person (likely off-peak round trip)
  • Special NJT “game day pass” for season tickets

Number of New Jersey Transit trains per hour, and running times:

  • Three trains from Penn Station in the first 15 minutes of each hour to Secaucus Junction, and the ride is about 12 minutes. From Secaucus, after making the transfer, the ride to the Stadium is about 10 minutes.
  • Hoboken train runs about every 10 minutes to the Stadium. The trip from Hoboken to the Stadium is about 25 minutes.

Metro-North and NJ Transit “Train to the GameTM” – Direct service from the New Haven Line to the Secaucus Junction/Meadowlands for games that kick-off at 1 p.m on Sundays (beginning August 2009):

  • Pre-Game: Two inbound trains from New Haven to Secaucus and one inbound train from Stamford to Secaucus
  • Post-Game: Three outbound trains from Secaucus to New Haven
  • Schedule (PDF) – link may be gone soon
  • Updated Schedule (PDF)
  • Further Updated Schedule (PDF) – link is still live for now, grab it while you can, trust me, it’s good stuff
  • Current Schedule, Valid 9/20/09 thru 10/17/09 (PDF)this is the one you NEED, big changes from the last one
  • Fare: Combined ticket will likely cost your regular Metro-North fare to Grand Central Terminal plus the New Jersey Transit fare outlined above
  • Information learned from the thread at Railroad.net:
    • The train will actually be a regularly scheduled NJT train west of Penn Station
    • Train equipment will likely be NJT ALP44 or ALP46 electric locomotives and Comet Multilevel coaches
    • Metro-North and ConnDOT equipment can not be used as they can not handle the voltage changes, power delivery methods, and clearances along the entire route
    • The 32 minute eastbound hold at Penn Station that Train 3646 will experience is due to a lack of slots through the East River Tunnelluckily this wait has been scheduled out of the schedule

Early Saturday Barge of Death Departure

The Barge of Death departed yesterday morning (Saturday, February 28, 2009) at about 10:00 AM. This is the earliest in the day I recall it ever departing. The barge appeared to be filled with about 60% R-32 cars and 40% R-38 cars.

Different (1) Trains and New Station Name

Some railfanning tidbits:

  1. Ten (10) cars of the R-62A “singles” class are no longer running on the (3) line, and are now running on the (1) line. What does this mean? It means you can possibly get a full size railfan window on the (1), if you are lucky.
  2. Shea Stadium, former home of the New York Mets, has been torn down, and has been replaced with Citi Field, the new home of the New York Mets. As such, the name of the adjacent subway station is changing from “Willets Point – Shea Stadium” to “Mets – Willets Point”. The Mets website already notes this change.

New South Ferry terminal not opening in the near future

Even though the platform width fix was only supposed to take three to four weeks, it looks like the new South Ferry subway terminal won’t be opening any time soon, since the MTA spokesman can’t give an opening date at this time. This comes after it didn’t open in January 2009 or December 2008, which were two previously announced opening dates.
